The Prior Lake Lantern Festival returns Tuesday, August 18 through Thursday, August 20, when lakeshore homes around Prior Lake string colorful lanterns along their decks and shorelines after dusk. Lantern festivals have long histories elsewhere, most familiarly Japan’s Obon lanterns floated in mid-August. The Prior Lake version started in 2023 with a group of lakeshore neighbors, and it has spread farther along the shoreline every year since. This year organizers are inviting the entire lakeshore community to take part.
The lights are best viewed from the water, so plan an evening cruise if you have boat access. There will be live music off the Lori Road shoreline on Wednesday, August 19 after 7 p.m., and on calm, windless nights you may see sky lanterns released over the lake.
