Prior Lake-Savage schools may start before Labor Day beginning in 2027
The Prior Lake-Savage school board takes up a pre-Labor Day start to the school year at a study session Monday, Sept. 28. The agenda item, “Flexible Learning Year 2027-2030,” is listed as a school year calendar with a pre-Labor Day start, and board action is requested at the regular meeting Oct. 12.
This school year started after Labor Day. Grades 6 and 9 began Tuesday, Sept. 8, the day after the holiday, and the rest of the grades followed Sept. 9 and 10, according to the district calendar.
The board set that on Nov. 10, 2025, voting 6-0 to start 2026-27 after Labor Day, with further discussion on 2027-28. A Minnesota law enacted in 2025 made a temporary exception to the state’s post-Labor Day start for the 2026-27 and 2027-28 school years. The item on Monday’s agenda runs from 2027 to 2030. The posted agenda lists no proposed start dates.
What's next: The board discusses it at a study session Monday, Sept. 28, at 6 pm at the District Services Center, 4540 Tower St. SE; the agenda has no open forum. Action is requested at the regular meeting Monday, Oct. 12, at 6 pm, where up to five residents can speak for three minutes each by signing up at the door before the meeting starts.
