Scott County votes Tuesday on a $33 solid waste fee for single-family homes

The Scott County Board votes Tuesday, Oct. 20, on raising the county’s solid waste special assessment for 2027 to $33 per single-family parcel, up from $27, according to the board’s agenda packet. The proposal raises the charge for each multi-family unit to $18, up from $12. The increase is on the consent agenda.

The county set up the residential fee in 1997. It funds the county’s Household Hazardous Waste facility, where residents take hazardous chemicals and problem materials, and staff time for programs that raise recycling rates and keep waste out of landfills. Staff wrote that the increase is meant to fully cover the facility’s operating and capital replacement costs as those costs rise and state grant revenue stays flat.

The fees also match state grants for programs in the county’s solid waste plan, among them citywide cleanup events, recycling and organics drop-off sites, business recycling grants and outreach. If adopted, the new fees would raise about $2,022,637, staff projects, which is $399,838 more than the $1,622,799 the current fees raise. Commercial and industrial properties pay separate rates that depend on assessed value.
