Shakopee extends trash and recycling contract with Dick’s Sanitation to 2031
The Shakopee City Council voted 4-1 on Tuesday, Aug. 4, to extend its trash and recycling contract with Dick’s Sanitation, according to the Aug. 4 minutes. Under the proposed extension rates attached to the staff report, the quarterly charge for a 65-gallon cart, trash plus recycling, rises each year from $64.20 in 2026 to $73.98 in 2031, when the extension ends.
For the 65-gallon cart, the proposed quarterly charge is $64.67 in 2027, $66.89 in 2028, $69.17 in 2029 and $71.52 in 2030. The same table lists rates for 35-gallon and 95-gallon carts.
The contract took effect Jan. 1, 2022 with an initial term of five years, and this is the first of its optional extensions. The resolution in the packet says the current agreement is scheduled to expire Dec. 31, 2026, and the working draft of the contract sets the extension at five years, from Jan. 1, 2027 through Dec. 31, 2031. The staff report says the general conditions stay the same, with a few changes: updated delinquent and certification provisions, removal of the cart purchase provision because Dick’s Sanitation now owns all of the carts, and extra bags for seasonal yard waste customers beyond the weekly allotment, with the first five bags included in the yard waste service fee and additional bags at additional fees.
The proposed additional pricing sheet lists $3.94 for each yard waste bag over five in 2027, rising each year to $4.61 in 2031.
