Shakopee sets 40 mph on the rebuilt Marystown Road between Vierling and 17th
The Shakopee City Council set a 40 mph speed limit for the rebuilt stretch of Marystown Road between Vierling Drive and 17th Avenue on Tuesday, Sept. 15, approving it on the consent agenda on a voice vote, according to the meeting video. A Sept. 9 engineering memo attached to the staff report says the two-year reconstruction “fully opened on August 21, 2026.” The posted limit there had ranged between 45 and 55 mph.
The memo says the project converted the corridor from a four-lane divided to a two-lane divided roadway with off-street pedestrian and bicycle facilities on both sides, and replaced three closely spaced stop-controlled intersections, including an all-way stop at Vierling Drive, with single-lane roundabouts.
Speed data collected at three locations from Aug. 31 through Sept. 8 puts 85th percentile speeds at 38 to 45 mph along the corridor, down about 5 to 13 mph from before the reconstruction. The memo recommends one 40 mph zone for the full reconstructed corridor rather than two. At 40 mph, the limit is 5 mph above Adams Street to the north and 15 mph below Marystown Road/CSAH 15 to the south.
The signs will be installed and paid for out of the project budget, the staff report says. Item 6.a was read with the rest of the consent agenda and nothing was pulled for separate discussion. The Sept. 15 minutes, approved at a later meeting, will record the vote.
