The Shakopee Mdewakanton Sioux Community’s annual Wacipi, one of the Midwest’s largest powwows, opens Friday night with the 7 p.m. grand entry, when hundreds of dancers of all ages, representing dozens of tribes from across the United States and Canada, enter the arena in full regalia at the SMSC Wacipi Grounds.
Drum groups and singers surround the arena, and Native American artists and crafters display traditional beadwork, jewelry, and handmade goods alongside food vendors serving authentic meals and treats. Admission details and the full schedule are at smscwacipi.org.
Know before you go: the SMSC prohibits firearms, alcohol, and drugs on all properties. Service animals as defined by the ADA are welcome; pets are not permitted.
